Parade in the Carnival Championship |
on
Saturday 13th Feb |
(Highly Recommended)
Yes! You can parade in the samba championship,
in any school of your choice. You don't even need to know
how to dance or anything of the sort. As the section leader
will instruct you: "All you need to do is to go out
there and have fun".
To parade, you just have to buy a costume and arrive on time. The best costumes to look for are the ones from the groups that will be parading at the beginning of the night (check group schedule), when you are not tired (or drunk), permiting you to parade and then watch the rest of the samba show.
This year, look for
Rocinha costumes, which are the more affordable
and just as much fun as the big name schools like Salgueiro
or Mangueira.
This year I'll be parading with Rocinha on Saturday, so
those who get a costume from me will have me and
my group along to party with. Parading in front
of 100s of thousands during the grandest spectacle in the
world is simply a must, and is something simply unique.
(Most tourists aren't aware of this possibility, and so
end up just watching, which is half the fun).

"Parading in the Sambodromo was one of the best carnival experiences I ever had. We won and got to go back for the parade of champions!"

How to Parade in the Carnival Championship
An option I'm extending to my readers, due to the success of this idea last year, is to parade IN the samba competition, then buy a ticket from desperate scalpers and watch the rest of the parade. This has several advantages over just watching the parade:
-
You get to participate in the event, instead of
just watching. HUGE bragging rights.
-
You end up with a unique, one of kind costume you
can take home. They are all very intricate and opulent...
- You
spend less than buying a sector 9 seat.
-
You get to watch the parade in the right amount
(no one can really put up with 10 hours of the show...
3 to 4 is plenty!)
-
You party more! Before parading, everyone is drinking
while waiting for their turn to go on.
-
It's easy: the instructions you'll get from the
samba school leader is "Go out there and have
fun". Our job is to walk along the sambodromo,
slowing down and speeding up, while dancing in whatever
form and waving to the crowds. Parading lasts roughly
45min.
To summarize, this IS the little known yet best carnival show option by far.
This
year I'm taking some of my readers along, together
with my friends, so we can make a large group, 25
to 30 or so.
If you would like to join, you'll just need to buy a costume in our samba aisle (there are roughly 13 aisles per samba group). I'll take care of the chaperoning and negotiating sambodromo tickets afterwards.
If
you want to participate in the world's biggest event,
let me know how many costumes I should get for you
and your crew, and what sizes (height, shoesize,
waste size, M or F). Costumes go for US$235 if you
order them by Friday Feb 3rd. They are going fast
as lots of brazilians are eating them up...

Parading in the Carnival Show Schedule:
on the 13th of February, Saturday
10pm: Meet at our headquarters in
Ipanema, where we´ll get dressed.
11pm: We´ll walk to the
nearby subway station in Copacabana (as traffic to
downtown is crazy), wearing the costume (you won't
be the only one looking ridiculous), where we'll form
our group and take the subway to the Sambodromo.
Midnight: Arrive at Sambodromo. We get
in position, wait and drink for an hour or so for
our samba schoo/group to go on.
1am: It's show time! Our samba school/group
starts parading through the sambodromo. Our section
goes in and we start waving and dancing like we don't
care. Jump around, throw kisses and wave to the crowd,
as we are being televised world-wide. We do this for
40 minutes, till we have crossed the Sambodromo.
2am: Leave the Sambodromo, get our
group together, take as much of the costumes off and
go buy cheap tickets from.
230pm: Watch the rest of the Samba
show.
4am: Head home
