Welcome
to Rio, an exciting queer destination! It’s a beautiful
city with an exotic mix of sensual people who are gay-friendly
and passionate. The city is teeming with excellent clubs, bars,
parties and cultural events to suit any queer taste.
The focal point is the gay beach, just
in front of Rua Farme de Amoedo, perhaps the gayest street
of Rio, in the chic neighborhood of Ipanema; a place to relax
and enjoy the view (and we’re not referring only to
sea and sand, mind you), and meet people. You’ll soon
see why the girl of Ipanema has been brushed aside by barbies
(see queer types). Don’t worry if you can’t speak
Portuguese, English and body-language is usually understood.
On weekends the beach in front of Copacabana
Palace attracts a mature as well as a bear crowd.
There is more to Rio than bichas (gay
men) on beaches, and if its parties you’re after, then
you’re in for a treat. Every night you can club and
party, the only problem is choice. There are circuit parties,
like B.I.T.C.H, The White Party, X-demente, and events like
Carnival, Pride, or New-Years Eve, which attracts many dancing
queers.
There are the top attractions (besides
barbies and lesbian-chic), like sugar loaf mountain and Christ,
and if you’re a culture vulture then Rio offers, lots
of history, architecture, LGBT cultural events, like a film
festival, theatre, and fascinating museums (and no, they don’t
have pin-up pictures, but interesting collection of art and
artifacts).
