Rio 1st Day Tips

IF SUNNY
Sit at the beach. Look for flip-flops and Brazilian beach gear, like bikini´s and swimming trunks. At the beach, rent a chair and umbrella from the tent vendors. Heck, why not a beer? Try out the different things the walking vendor´s have to offer, such as Biscoito Globo, sucolé and esfiha. Just don´t eat the tray shrimp on skewers… not a good idea.

IF CLOUDY OR RAINY
Do your travel shopping at a mall like Shopping da Gávea, an intimate yet complete mall 12minutes away from hotels in Ipanema, Leblon and Copacabana. Plan to stay a full day. If it is early in the day, you can participate in a 1-day Brazilian cooking class to learn the Bahian menu or the feijoada ritual. Classes start at 2pm, so schedule early. Conversely, a pub-crawl in Ipanema to Leblon, Copacabana to Leme or in Centro are a good, low-effort option. Or you can head to a restaurant with a view, like Casa da Feijoada or Churrrascaria Porcão and have a long lunch.

WHAT TO GET
Before you go around Rio, be sure to get the following items:
Engov (Brazilian hang-over medicine that works)
Flip-flops (buy a bunch to take home as gifts)
Beach gear (don’t look like a gringo)
Cash – look for HSBC, Citibank or Banco do Brasil banks to use your foreign card.

WHAT TO CARRY
Rio is a big city, and as such, don´t be naïve: no jewelry or anything you can´t live without. You can carry your mobile phone, a compact digital camera, a “non-passport” id, along with a photocopy of your passport, at least R$100 reais (Brazilian currency, pronounced “hey-ice”) in small bills (get the R$50 changed any chance you get). Bring your travel guide with, we recommend ours, Rio For Partiers, Rio traveler’s favorite.

PLAN YOUR DAYS AHEAD
Be sure to plan your days ahead, otherwise you´ll miss out on some of the best Rio has to offer. You should always ask your reception or concierge to book for you. Calling yourself doesn´t get you any discounts and can get complicated whenever the tour operator needs to call you back to confirm. The following are tours worth working into your trip: Cooking classes; Soccer game at Maracanã stadium; Tour of a Favela; any adventure sport like hang-gliding, scuba-diving, hiking etc; any big concert by famous artists.
